Lorenzo Musetti has withdrawn from the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo after sustaining a finger injury during practice.
The No. 25 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, Musetti suffered a small fracture that has ruled him out of the hard-court ATP 500 event in the Japanese capital, which began on Wednesday. Yet the former Top-5 star remained hopeful he would recover in time for the Rolex Shanghai Masters, which runs from 7 to 18 October.
“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in Tokyo this year due to a small fracture in my right ring finger that I sustained during a tennis practice,” Musetti wrote on Instagram. “I’m obviously very disappointed, especially because I was really looking forward to playing in front of my Japanese fans and experiencing the incredible atmosphere of Tokyo once again.
“I’ll do everything I can over the next few days to recover and be ready to compete in Shanghai. Thank you for all your support and messages. I hope to see you very soon. See you soon, Japan!”
A two-time ATP Tour champion, Musetti is 20-11 for the 2026 season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Earlier this year, he also missed Roland Garros and Wimbledon due to a thigh injury, but returned with some impressive performances across the North American hard-court summer, including quarter-final runs in Washington and Cincinnati.
Last week, the 24-year-old Italian made a splash in the fashion world, when he joined global superstar Jennifer Lopez on stage at Vogue World: Milano.
