Former champion Stan Wawrinka, Gael Monfils and #NextGenATP star Moise Kouame are among the players who received wild cards into the Roland Garros main draw, the tournament announced Monday.
Wawrinka, the 2015 champion, is set for his 21st appearance at Roland Garros. The 41-year-old, who is playing in his final ATP Tour season, has enjoyed tremendous success in the French capital. Wawrinka won the trophy in 2015 by defeating Novak Djokovic in the championship match and Roger Federer in the quarter-finals. The three-time Grand Slam titlist holds a 46-19 tournament record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Wawrinka also reached the final in Paris in 2017 and the semi-finals in 2016.
Home hero Monfils, who is also competing in his final season on Tour, has received a wild card into his home Slam. Monfils made his tournament debut in 2005 and has since missed only one edition, in 2022. The 39-year-old's best result came in 2008 when he reached the semi-finals before losing to Federer in four sets. The Frenchman also reached the quarter-finals in 2009, 2011 and 2014 and holds a 40-17 win-loss record. Last year, Monfils lost to Jack Draper in the second round.
#NextGenATP Frenchman Kouame is set for his Grand Slam main-draw debut on home soil. The 17-year-old began his season by lifting his first two titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour in France. He followed those triumphs by coming through qualifying to make his tour-level main-draw debut at the Open Occitanie in Montpellier. In March, Kouame made his ATP Masters 1000 debut at the Miami Open presented by Itau and is now set to compete at a major for the first time.
Titouan Droguet, Hugo Gaston and Arthur Gea are also among the Frenchmen who were announced as main-draw wild cards. Two other players, 21-year-old American Nishesh Basavareddy and Australian star Adam Walton, have also received main-draw wild cards at the second major of the year.
Home hopes Florent Bax, Robin Bertrand, Sean Cuenin, Thomas Faurel, Antoine Ghibaudo, Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg, Calvin Hemery and Daniel Jade, and 2016 quarter-finalist David Goffin each received a wild card into qualifying.
