Alexander Zverev wasted little time notching a second-round win at Wimbledon on Thursday afternoon as the ATP Tour’s Top-10 stars turned on the style at the grass-court major.

The No. 3 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, Zverev dispatched Valentin Royer 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(3) in two hours and four minutes on No. 1 Court, his 50th tour-level win on grass. The 29-year-old German fired 14 aces and converted five of eight break points he earned in an accomplished all-around performance, and the Roland Garros champion is now on a nine-match winning streak at Grand Slam level.

“For two and a half sets I played an almost perfect match,” Zverev, whose only blemish came when he let slip a 4-2 lead in the third set, said in his on-court interview. “Then I lost a bit of focus and he used it very well. He made it very interesting in the end, but definitely happy to be through in straight sets and not have to play another set, even though I love to play here at Wimbledon! It’s nice to win easier at the beginning of the week.”

Despite his status as one of men’s tennis’ most consistent performers across the past decade, Zverev has never been past the fourth round at Wimbledon. The 25-time tour-level titlist has reached the championship match at the three other majors and is this fortnight bidding to become just the 13th player in the Open Era to reach the final at all four.

Standing between Zverev and a return to the Wimbledon fourth round will be Marcos Giron, who earlier eased past Quentin Halys 7-6(5), 6-3, 6-4. Zverev leads American lefty Giron 4-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series, with two of those meetings having come on grass (Wimbledon R2 in 2024, Halle R1 in 2025).

World No. 6 Alex de Minaur and No. 7 Taylor Fritz also breezed into the third round Thursday at SW19. Australia’s De Minaur made the task of taking on experienced grass player Adrian Mannarino look easy, registering a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 triumph in just one hour and 50 minutes. De MInaur will next face American Zachary Svajda, who outlasted Kamil Majchrzak 2-6, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3.

Meanwhile Fritz, who arrived in London having reached back-to-back finals on grass in Stuttgart and Halle, respectively, downed his fellow American Patrick Kypson 6-2, 6-2, 7-5. A semi-finalist at Wimbledon a year ago, the 28-year-old Fritz will now prepare for a third-round clash with Lorenzo Sonego, who defeated Gabriel Diallo 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 6-2.

Another in-form player on the grass, Eastbourne champion Zizou Bergs, continued his personal-best run at Wimbledon with a 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Jaime Faria. Bergs, who had not won a main-draw match at SW19 in three attempts prior to this year, will play Arthur Fery for a fourth-round berth. Home favourite Fery downed Ben Shelton's conqueror, Otto Virtanen, 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-3.

Roland Garros finalist Flavio Cobolli also advanced. The ninth seed beat James Duckworth 7-6(4), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-1 and will next meet Karen Khachanov, who downed Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
